How Microchip's BlueSky® GNSS Timing Solutions Are Powering the Next Generation of Critical Infrastructure

Microchip BlueSky GNSS timing solutions for critical infrastructure

Precise timing is the dependency almost nobody notices until it slips. A mobile call, a stock trade, a power grid holding its phase, a data center keeping its records in order: all of it rests on clocks that agree with each other down to the nanosecond. When that agreement breaks, even for a moment, the effects spread quickly.

Microchip builds the hardware that keeps those clocks honest. Its GNSS Disciplined Oscillator (GNSSDO) portfolio delivers Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) that stays accurate even when the satellite signal drops out for a while. These systems are made for work where a lost second is not an option, so infrastructure keeps running without interruption.

As a Microchip Authorized Distributor, E.C.I. Networks helps customers choose, integrate and deploy these timing technologies for the applications where precision, security and reliability are non-negotiable.

The clock behind critical infrastructure

Timing is the quiet backbone of digital infrastructure. It rarely comes up in a design review, yet almost every system leans on it. Here is where a shared, accurate clock is doing the heavy lifting.

5G and telecom
Synchronized radios are what let handoffs, carrier aggregation and shared spectrum work at all.
Power and utility grids
Grid stability and fault location depend on time-stamped measurements that line up across every substation.
Financial markets
Trading and clearing systems need synchronization fine enough to order events that happen microseconds apart.
Data centers and cloud
Distributed databases, logs and transactions stay consistent only when every node shares the same clock.
Industrial automation
Robotics and control systems coordinate on shared time, so motion and sensing stay in step.

As more of this leans on GNSS, the reasons to protect that signal only grow.

When the signal from orbit is under attack

GNSS is remarkably accurate, but the signal that arrives from orbit is faint and carries no proof of where it came from. That makes it a target. Jamming simply drowns it out. Spoofing is sneakier: a counterfeit signal feeds a receiver the wrong time on purpose, and a whole network can drift without anyone realizing why.

Microchip's BlueSky® GNSS Firewall sits in the antenna line, between the antenna and the receiver, and works the way a network firewall does. It inspects every incoming signal, filters out interference, confirms what is genuine and passes only trusted timing through to the equipment downstream.

Antenna

Raw GNSS signal arrives from orbit

BlueSky GNSS Firewall

Filters, checks and confirms every signal

Receiver

Only trusted timing gets through

Critical systems

Networks, grids, markets, data centers

Because it drops into the antenna run you already have, a team can harden a deployment it already trusts without tearing it out and starting over.

Proving the time is right with SkyWire

The newest capability in the BlueSky GNSS Firewall, SkyWire™, changes how a site proves its time is actually correct.

Instead of trusting GNSS as the only source, SkyWire treats the satellites as a shared reference point. Two sites that watch the same satellites at the same moment can compare their clocks directly, a method known as common-view timing. If one site starts to drift, the comparison shows it right away.

Both sites watch the same satellites at the same time, then compare clocks. If one drifts, the difference is obvious.

SkyWire also keeps each site traceable to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) from national timing laboratories. Accuracy holds across a distributed network, and there is now a second, independent way to confirm it.

Seeing the whole timing network at once

Protecting one device is only part of the job. A team running dozens or hundreds of sites needs to see the entire timing network at a glance, not one box at a time.

Microchip's TimePictra® software works alongside the BlueSky GNSS Firewall and SkyWire to bring timing data from every site into one place. Operators get a single view they can act on.

Compare clocks across every location
Watch synchronization drift as it happens
Flag anomalies before they spread
Trace a problem back to a specific site

For a national carrier, a hyperscale operator or a utility, that single view is often the difference between a quiet fix and a public outage.

Where precise timing actually gets used

Microchip's timing portfolio is built for the places where a nanosecond genuinely counts.

5G and telecom networks

Keeps radios and core in sync so capacity and coverage hold up under load.

Satellite communications

Anchors links and payloads to a stable, verifiable reference clock.

Power and utility grids

Time-aligns the measurements that protect and balance the grid.

Financial trading

Orders events precisely and keeps timestamps auditable and compliant.

Data centers and cloud

Keeps distributed systems consistent as they scale across regions.

Industrial automation

Coordinates robotics, sensing and control down to the step.

Aerospace and defense

Delivers resilient PNT for secure, mission-critical operations.

National timing and metrology labs

Provides ultra-precise references for official time scales and calibration.

Together, Microchip's GNSSDO solutions and the BlueSky GNSS Firewall give organizations timing they can trust, plus a practical way to keep trusting it as the threats keep changing.
