Executive summary

One of Latin America's leading telecommunications operators deployed ECI Networks (ECIN) PacketMaestro and PacketMaestro PRO as a replacement for its existing NetScout software-based packet broker.

As part of the validation and acceptance process, ECIN demonstrated that PacketMaestro could deliver the required packet broker functionality while providing comprehensive operational visibility and flexible control through both CLI and GUI interfaces.

The solution passed the customer's extensive validation and homologation testing, with all required tests completed successfully. It has now been running in the customer's production environment for more than one year, demonstrating the stability, reliability, and operational maturity of the platform.

Challenge: a like-for-like replacement

The customer operates a highly complex telecommunications network where reliable access to network traffic is critical for monitoring, troubleshooting, security, and service assurance. The existing environment relied on a NetScout software packet broker to aggregate, filter, map, and deliver traffic to monitoring and analysis tools.

The replacement had to match the installed platform capability for capability. Not simply forward packets, but manage traffic in real time and give network operations teams immediate control and visibility.

Ten requirements defined the acceptance criteria:

  • Advanced packet broker functionality
  • Flexible traffic filtering and forwarding
  • Dynamic creation and modification of traffic maps
  • Dynamic addition and removal of rules
  • Real-time traffic statistics
  • Operational visibility through CLI
  • Operational visibility and management through GUI
  • Configuration changes without disrupting operations
  • Reliable, continuous production operation
  • Demonstrated functional equivalence to NetScout

Solution: PacketMaestro and PacketMaestro PRO

ECIN implemented PacketMaestro and PacketMaestro PRO to address the customer's packet broker requirements. Together they provide a high-performance packet processing and traffic management platform built to give telecommunications operators granular control over network traffic.

During the validation process, ECIN demonstrated the solution using both the PacketMaestro CLI and GUI, showing that network engineers could perform configuration, monitoring, and operational changes from either interface.

The result is a flexible architecture for aggregating network traffic, applying traffic processing policies, and delivering selected traffic to downstream monitoring and analysis systems.

Validation: two ways to operate

A critical part of the engagement was proving that ECIN could perform the functions previously provided by NetScout. Rather than limiting the validation to a basic traffic forwarding demonstration, ECIN ran an extensive functional demonstration covering both configuration and real-time operational behavior, through each interface in turn.

Command line
  • Configuration and management of traffic maps
  • Creation and removal of rules
  • Traffic filtering and forwarding configuration
  • Real-time traffic statistics
  • Verification of traffic flows
  • Operational monitoring
  • Dynamic configuration changes
  • Validation of packet-processing behavior
Graphical management
  • Visualization of the packet-broker configuration
  • Creation and modification of maps
  • Addition and removal of traffic rules
  • Real-time statistics
  • Traffic-flow visibility
  • Operational status monitoring
  • Dynamic configuration changes
  • Centralized management of the environment

The CLI demonstration gave the customer's engineering team direct visibility into the underlying packet processing operations and configuration. The GUI demonstration showed the same work in an intuitive operational workflow, proving that engineers could manage the solution without relying exclusively on CLI-based operations.

Value delivered

Real-time traffic visibility

One of the most important aspects of the validation was the ability to observe traffic behavior as it happened. ECIN demonstrated the collection and presentation of real-time statistics, letting operators see how traffic entered the packet broker infrastructure and how it was processed, filtered, and delivered.

This gives network operations teams immediate feedback when they modify traffic policies and maps. It mattered to this customer in particular, because engineers could make a configuration change and validate its effect on the traffic flow straight away.

Dynamic configuration

A key capability demonstrated during the validation was the ability to modify the traffic processing configuration on the fly, without waiting for a maintenance window. ECIN walked the customer through the full configuration lifecycle:

Configuration lifecycle, performed on a live system
01 Add maps
02 Add rules
03 Modify traffic policies
04 Remove rules
05 Remove maps
06 Verify traffic statistics

Every step was carried out dynamically, allowing the customer's engineers to adapt the packet processing environment as monitoring and troubleshooting requirements changed. That flexibility is particularly valuable in large telecommunications networks, where waiting for a scheduled maintenance window delays troubleshooting and service assurance.

Functional equivalence to NetScout

The validation demonstrated that ECIN PacketMaestro could replace the existing NetScout packet broker software environment while satisfying every operational and functional capability the customer required:

  • Comparable packet broker functionality
  • Flexible traffic management
  • Real-time operational visibility
  • CLI-based configuration and monitoring
  • GUI-based configuration and monitoring
  • Dynamic map management
  • Dynamic rule management
  • Real-time traffic statistics
  • Operational flexibility
  • Production-grade reliability

The validation was completed successfully, with the required functionality demonstrated and verified by the customer.

Sustainable results

The ultimate validation of any network infrastructure solution is not a laboratory demonstration. It is sustained operation in a production telecommunications environment. Following the successful validation and deployment, the ECIN solution has remained in operation for more than one year, which is tangible evidence of five things:

Reliability Continuous operation inside a Tier-1 production network
Stability Consistent behavior across more than a year of service
Performance Traffic processed under live production load
Flexibility Maps and rules changed without a maintenance window
Readiness Proven through full validation and homologation testing
From proof-of-concept to production

The deployment draws an important distinction between a technology demonstration and a successful customer deployment. ECIN did not simply show that packets could be forwarded. The project proved out the complete operational lifecycle:

Operational lifecycle, validated end to end
  1. Traffic ingestion
  2. Processing
  3. Filtering
  4. Mapping
  5. Forwarding
  6. Real-time statistics
  7. Dynamic configuration
  8. Operational monitoring

Every stage was validated through both the CLI and the GUI, then proven by more than a year of production operation.

By replacing its NetScout packet broker software environment with ECIN PacketMaestro and PacketMaestro PRO, the customer gained a modern packet broker platform with comprehensive traffic management and operational visibility.

Its network engineering teams can now adapt traffic visibility to operational requirements quickly, while keeping real-time insight into the behavior of the packet processing infrastructure.

Why ECIN?

The Mexico deployment represents a significant customer success for ECIN, and it demonstrates the ability of PacketMaestro and PacketMaestro PRO to replace an established packet broker solution in a demanding telecommunications environment.

Through comprehensive functional validation, ECIN demonstrated the required packet broker capabilities across both CLI and GUI interfaces, including real-time statistics and the dynamic creation, modification, and removal of maps and rules.

The result is more than a successful PoC. It is a proven production deployment showing that ECIN PacketMaestro delivers the functionality, flexibility, and reliability a Tier-1 telecommunications operator requires.
